It started with cleaning my room for Thanksgiving.
My daughter was coming home, so I needed to clear out my bedroom–office hybrid. I expected a quick tidy-up.
It turned into a confrontation.
Not with my stuff — but with myself.
I found piles of half-built businesses, stacks of courses I paid thousands for, journals full of brilliant ideas that never saw daylight, three different “this is the one that will change everything” projects…
And as I looked at it all laid bare, I heard the Lord whisper:
“This isn’t clutter. It’s spiritual chaos in disguise.”
It hit me like a truth I already knew but hadn’t dared to face.
For six years, my life has been one long identity transition.
I went from a married woman building his businesses… to a single woman who hadn’t worked outside the home in 30 years… to a mother trying to support kids, aging parents, friends, and a house… to a woman asking God daily, “What do You want me to do next?”
And every time I’d sit with Him in the quiet, He’d give me something — a word a vision a message
an idea a direction
And I’d feel clarity and peace.
But by the end of the day?
Gone.
Buried under:
- someone needing something
- another crisis
- another course I thought I “should” take
- the pressure to pick the “right” profitable business
- the fear of choosing the wrong one
- the constant interruptions
- the chronic overwhelm
And the stacks kept growing.
Not just on my desk — in my spirit.
What we give attention to grows.
Whether we want it to or not.
Chaos grows when we attend to chaos. Fear grows when we attend to fear. Distraction grows when we attend to distraction.
And here’s the kicker:
Even solution-hunting can create chaos when the searching replaces the listening.
I was so busy trying to solve my life that I wasn’t embodying the identity God had already given me.
I knew truth in my head, but I wasn’t carrying it in my body, so my house kept reflecting the disconnect.
Identity → Character → Authority → Expression
This is the divine order.
You receive your identity from God. You contain His character. You carry His authority. You broadcast His love.
But when your inner world is cluttered, your identity gets muffled. Your authority gets diffused. Your focus gets fractured.
And your home — your atmosphere — starts showing you exactly where you’re leaking peace.
My room wasn’t messy because I was lazy. It was messy because I was scattered.
Unanchored.
Attending to everything except the one thing the Lord kept asking for:
My presence. My attention. My alignment.
The piles were preaching.
Every unfinished project was a sermon about:
- divided attention
- unhealed transitions
- unprocessed emotions
- beliefs I outgrew but hadn’t released
- ideas from God that I heard but never embodied
- identity shifts I hadn’t stabilized
The clutter wasn’t the issue. It was the evidence.
A symptom of a spiritual nervous system living in reactivity instead of regulation.
Chaos is what happens when we attend to the wrong thing.
Not intentionally. Not rebelliously. Just unconsciously.
When we attend to:
- pressure instead of purpose
- distraction instead of direction
- people’s needs instead of God’s voice
- problems instead of Presence
- solutions instead of identity
We end up living in spiritual noise.
Peace isn’t the absence of stuff. It’s the alignment of attention.
**Purpose leads to growth.
Solutions can lead to chaos.**
Purpose is anchored. Solutions are frantic.
Purpose is guided by the Spirit. Solutions are driven by fear and pressure.
Purpose is steady. Solutions scramble.
Purpose makes room for peace. Solutions bury you alive under half-finished attempts at fixing yourself.
What the Lord showed me in that moment was simple but confronting:
“Your home is telling the story your mouth won’t say.”
And it was true.
The piles were showing me where my soul was still fragmented.
So here’s the invitation — for you and for me:
Look around your space. Then listen to your body.
Notice:
- where the tension pulls
- where the heaviness sits
- what feels chaotic
- what feels peaceful
- what feels ignored
- what feels like pressure
- what feels like God
- and what feels like fear
Your home is preaching to you.
Not to shame you. To lead you.
Because peace isn’t a personality. It’s a practice.
A regulated, Spirit-led practice.
**So today, I’m not asking myself, “How do I clean this?”
I’m asking, “What is this space telling me about where my attention has been?”**
And I’m shifting from: solutions → to purpose pressure → to presence distraction → to direction chaos → to peace identity confusion → to identity embodiment
This isn’t just about decluttering a room. It’s about disentangling your spirit.
It’s about remembering who you are — and Who you belong to.
**Your peace is waiting.
Your identity is waiting. Your alignment is waiting.**
And yes… sometimes it starts with cleaning your room.
But it always ends with God cleaning your inner world.
