Sweet friend, if you’ve ever felt like motherhood is asking too much from a heart already running on empty, I want you to know: you’re not broken. You’re not too much or not enough. Your nervous system is simply waving a white flag.
In my work with Christian moms and mission-led women, I’ve seen it again and again—our symptoms are not the problem; they’re the signal. God created our bodies to speak when our hearts are overwhelmed. When we slow down to listen, healing begins.
Here are 10 signs your nervous system may need grace—and gentle tools to begin the shift from survival into peace.
1. That feeling of being constantly on edge, where even small tasks feel overwhelming—this isn’t weakness, it’s your body speaking.
🛠️Tool: Begin each day with a “Peace Reset”—5 slow breaths in for 5 counts and exhale for 5 counts, one hand over your heart, one over your belly. Breathe in God’s peace (John 14:27) and exhale what’s not yours to carry.
2. Finding yourself snapping at your precious little ones, then feeling that wave of guilt afterward. Your irritability isn’t who you are—it’s a signal.
🛠️Tool: When you react, pause, place your feet on the ground, and whisper: “God, help me repair, not retreat.” Then gently reconnect with your child. Repair heals faster than perfection ever could.
3. You have aches, pains, or chronic illness with no clear cause. Your body is holding what your heart hasn’t been able to release.
🛠️Tool: Use a simple daily body scan. Invite the Holy Spirit into tight or painful areas. Say, “Lord, show me what this place is holding. Is there a story here I need to address?”
4.Sensitivity that feels like too much—lights too bright, sounds too loud, tags too scratchy. Your senses are protecting you from overwhelm.
🛠️Tool: Try a “sensory Sabbath” once a week—turn off notifications, use soft lighting, and wear cozy clothes. Give your nervous system a day to reset in calm.
5. You’re exhausted but can’t sleep. Rest feels impossible when your body is still bracing for danger.
🛠️Tool: Try “scripture soaking” before bed. Read Psalm 4:8 or Isaiah 26:3 aloud while applying calming essential oils like lavender or frankincense. Let God’s promises be the lullaby.
6. You can’t focus. Your mind is in a thousand directions. God created our minds for peace, not chaos. Isaiah 26:3 is a great one to memorize.
🛠️Tool: Use the 3×3 Grounding Tool: Name 3 things you see, 3 things you hear, and 3 things you can touch. It brings you back into the present.
7. Food becoming either something you forget about or turn to for comfort, with appetite swinging like a pendulum. This is your body trying to regulate in the only way it knows how.
🛠️Tool: Start a “grace before food” practice. Not just prayer, but pause. Ask: “Is this fuel, fix, or feeling?” Then invite God to be your Comforter before you eat.
8. Hormones and immunity are all over the place but are speaking the same truth—your body is asking for help. This is not random. It’s communication.
🛠️Tool: Start cycle mapping with grace. Track your emotions, energy, and symptoms alongside your menstrual cycle or hormone shifts. It brings compassion and patterns into view.
9. Your skin and digestion flare with stress. Our bodies tell stories our voices sometimes can’t.
🛠️Tool: Add a daily journaling check-in: “What am I not saying that my body is showing?” Then ask God for the courage to express truth in love—first with yourself, then with others.
10. Absorbing everyone else’s emotions like a sponge, feeling responsible for the atmosphere around you. You weren’t made to carry atmospheres.
🛠️Tool: Before you enter a room, whisper: “Lord, help me walk in with Your peace, not their pressure.” Picture a shield of light around you. You are a thermostat, not a thermometer.
Now imagine trying to parent from this place! I see you. I have been there. And sometimes, I still find myself there again. What I have learned is this: These signs aren’t something to be ashamed of—they are sacred invitations. Invitations to find out how deeply God desires us to become free and whole. He doesn’t just want you to survive motherhood. He wants to walk with you in it, fully alive and at peace in your body, spirit, and calling.
Let’s trade striving for surrender. Survival for shalom. Fear for freedom.
